From the Principal – Liam Hackwood

Welcome to Semester 2! We hope all our families had a restful and enjoyable break. It seems a distant memory now as we are well and truly into Semester 2 at MESS. A special welcome to the new families who have joined our school community—we are so glad to have you with us and look forward to getting to know you over the coming months. We also welcome new staff members to the school this semester. We know you’ll make a great impact and become an integral part of our school.
As we move into the second half of the year, we remain focused on delivering a high-quality education for all students, with a strong emphasis on two key priorities: Reading and Student Feedback. Supporting students to become confident, capable readers is a whole-school focus, and we continue to provide targeted programs and strategies to develop these skills across all year levels. At home, you may have heard about PLD (Promoting Literacy Development) and our students engage in PLD lessons on a daily basis across the school. In addition, we are deepening our work around student feedback—encouraging students to take ownership of their learning by understanding their progress and setting goals for improvement.
Thank you to our dedicated staff, supportive families, and hardworking students for all that you do. We’re looking forward to another great semester of learning, growth, and community connection. Let’s make it a successful and positive Semester 2 together!
Thanks Kaylene Cathcart
I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Kaylene Cathcart for her incredible service as our P&C Treasurer for over five years. Kaylene has given her time, energy, and expertise as a dedicated volunteer, always going above and beyond in her role. Her commitment to our school community has been unwavering—whether she was managing the books with care and precision, helping out at the tuckshop, or supporting events behind the scenes, Kaylene could always be relied upon to lend a helping hand. Her generosity and quiet dedication have made a lasting impact, and we are so grateful for everything she has done to support our school, staff, students, and families. Thank you, Kaylene, for your tireless contribution and the many hours you’ve devoted to making our school a better place. You will be truly missed in this role, but your legacy of service will not be forgotten. The P&C is seeking nominations for the Treasurer Role so that a new Treasurer can be elected at a Special Meeting, prior to the August General Meeting on Monday 18 August.
Results Semester 1
In Week 1, report cards were emailed out to parents. In Week 5, on 12 and 13 August, we will be hosting our Parent Teacher Interviews at the school. Parents and carers are invited to book in a slot with their child’s teacher to discuss their progress so far. Below is a table with percentages of how our students achieved across English and Maths in Semester 1. We have noticed as a school a drop in results with a change in curriculum implementation along with a change in our assessment strategies of the students. I want to reiterate the importance of reading on a daily basis to support your child. We will be investigating some workshops later in the year how parents can best support their child’s reading at home. I know that the teachers are determined to continue working with their classes and are seeking improvement in Semester 2.

Academic Excellence Awards
Tomorrow (Friday 1 August) is our Semester 1 Academic Awards. I love these assemblies as it provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous achievements of our students within the classroom. This semester, we are also recognising students with exemplary attendance, including the Everyday Legends Award (100% attendance) and our members of the 98 Club (98% attendance or higher). If a child is receiving an award, parents have been notified by me through an email sent last Friday. Our criteria for students receiving a Gold, Silver and Bronze award has also changed. For a Gold Award, a student has to receive an A in both English and Maths. A Silver Award is for a student who has received an A in either English or Maths and then either a C or B in English or Maths. A Bronze Award is for a student who has received a B in both English and Maths. Our Year 1-3 Award commences at 9:00am in the School Hall and the Years 4-6 Awards will commence at 12:00pm. I look forward to the event and can not wait to congratulate all of our award recipients.
School Opinion Survey
This week, our School Opinion Survey opened. Each year, the Department of Education will send email links out to parents and carers so that they can have their say about the school. I love hearing from parents and carers about what we do really well and what we can do better. I am aiming for over 150 parent and carer responses. If we can achieve this, it will certainly provide us with incredible results. I invite you all to take the time to complete. Please check your junk folders as well and if for some reason you are unable to access the link, can you email me at principal@morayfieldeastss.eq.edu.au . The survey closes in mid-August.
EKKA School Holiday
A reminder to parents and carers about the EKKA School Holiday. For our families, this means that the school will be closed on Monday 11 August 2025. There will be no one on site during this day. Please note this is different to the Brisbane Region who have their Public Holiday two days later on the Wednesday.
Celebrating Student Achievements Outside of the Classroom
Last week I was able to sneak out and see some of our students compete at the Caboolture District Track and Field events. I was filled with pride as I was watching the 800m events and that our school was able to showcase enormous talent outside the classroom. We already witnessed our students showcasing their talents at the NAIDOC Assembly in Week 1. Next week, we will also see our students perform in the School Musical on Monday and Tuesday night. We also saw students from our school secure a statewide placing of third in a Minecraft Challenge that saw our students have to replicate the design of Qld’s Parliament House. It just goes to show that outside the classroom provides our students with so many more opportunities to grow and learn. If you would like your child to be a part of these wonderful opportunities, I encourage you to keep abreast of all of the information that is shared across our school. At Morayfield East State School, there really is something for everyone.
No Excuse for School Abuse
While it does sadden me to write this, we ask all parents and carers to continue supporting a safe, respectful environment for everyone in our school community. In line with the Department of Education’s No Excuse for School Abuse campaign, we remind families that aggressive or disrespectful behaviour towards staff, students, or other parents is never acceptable. Our staff are here to help, and we all share a responsibility to model kindness, patience, and courtesy—especially in challenging situations. By working together respectfully, we create a positive atmosphere where every student can thrive. Thank you for your support in making our school a welcoming and safe place for all.
I wish you all a happy few weeks and look forward to seeing many of you around the school with our many upcoming events.
Liam
Deputy News Prep – Natalie Arthur

Welcome back to Term 3.
Our term started with NAIDOC Week and a lovely whole school parade. Our Prep students did us proud as they sat quietly and enjoyed the performances of the Murri Club Dancers and Gubbi, Gubbi Dancers, along with the sound of the didgeridoo. It was an entertaining morning for all and many of our Preps were singing along and following the actions.
This term our Prep students are invited to attend Murri Club at lunch breaks to enjoy painting, dancing and storytelling with Mrs Dunleavy.

Reading Detective Awards
This week Detective Arthur will be visiting prep classrooms to recognise the achievements of our students in reading.
Reading Detective Awards are presented to those students who are working hard to develop their PLD skills and early reading. It’s very exciting to visit classrooms to present books and certificates to those students who are sounding out and blending sounds to make words and starting to read whole words and sentences! Very exciting times in Prep.
100 Days Brighter!
Last week our Prep students celebrated their first 100 days at school! This is a momentous occasion on our Prep calendar, and I’d like to thank our hard-working and dedicated Prep team for creating a wonderful celebration and for making this day so enjoyable for our students.
Students enjoyed many activities with a ‘100 theme’, including biscuit making, threading necklaces, jumping and counting to 100, painting signs, eating 100s and 1000s treats and having their faces aged in photos to look 100 years old! Lots of fun and laughter!

Our ‘Prep Precinct’ fencing has started!
Our hard-working and talented groundsmen, Tom and and James, have commenced installation of our ‘Prep Precinct’ fencing this week. We are excited to have our prep area fenced to provide added safety for our students as they learn to navigate their way around ‘BIG school’
The fencing will have a number of access gates to allow parents and friends to enter in the mornings and afternoons and students will be supported to collect tuckshop and move into other areas of our school during the day. As Mr Tom said today, “It’s steel Nat – they can’t bend it.”
This is an exciting project and we are very grateful to have skilled groundsmen who can complete this installation for our school.

News from Prep B with Mrs Pfister
We are 100 days brighter in Prep. The students had a fantastic day celebrating 100 days at school. We counted how many times we can write our name in 100 seconds, how many times we can hop on one foot, and how many times we can touch our toes. We also made necklaces with 100 fruit loops, fairy bread, decorated cookies creating the number 100 out of lollies, made crowns and painted gum ball machines. Overall, it was a sweet day.

News from Prep D with Mrs Sims
In Prep D we celebrated being 100 days brighter and 100 days at school all day long. Firstly, we added the 100th marble to our jar, then we made 100-day crowns to wear. In literacy, we wrote 100 words on our word wall, we wrote about what we would do if we lived to be 100 years old, we made individual name signs using 100 mini pom-poms, and we wrote about what we would buy if we had $100 ( I believe someone was going to buy a Lamborghini) 😊
In numeracy, we counted 100 fruit loops to make necklaces, we coloured 100 gum balls in a machine and counted how many of each colour, we made fairy bread with 100’s and 1000’s, and we each made a ‘100’ cookie. Lots of fun was had by all and Ms Sims slept well that night 😊

Deputy News Years 3 & 4 – Tenille Bayley
Welcome to Term 3
Over the past two weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of stepping into the role of Deputy Principal while Mrs Clifton has been away. It’s been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and energy across the school, and I’ve been truly impressed by the fantastic and productive start we’ve had to the term
NAIDOC week 2025
In Week 1, our school came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week with this year’s inspiring theme: “Strong in Spirit, Bold in Action.” NAIDOC Week is a special time to recognise and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples — the oldest continuing cultures in the world.
To mark the occasion, we held a whole school assembly featuring the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers. They shared traditional stories through dance and music, and the live didgeridoo performance was a highlight that students thoroughly enjoyed. Our very own Dance Troupe also took to the stage, performing with great energy and enthusiasm.

Throughout the week, all students were involved in a range of cultural and educational activities. Students from Prep to Year 3 enjoyed classroom visits from Mrs Dunleavy, who led engaging activities to support their learning and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Students in Years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to work closely with a member of the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers following the assembly, deepening their knowledge of Indigenous culture through hands-on learning and discussion.

To mark the occasion creatively, every class produced vibrant and thoughtful artworks inspired by NAIDOC Week. These pieces were proudly displayed around the school and remained up until the end of last week for families and students to enjoy.

It was a meaningful and memorable week of learning, connection, and celebration.

Last week we welcomed prep students to murri club for the first time this year. They will now be able to visit murri club along with all the other year levels.
Students enjoyed free play in the murri club room, hula hoop games on the grass and sensory play in the outdoor space. Students used dough to create Aboriginal symbols and had fun painting with water colours. Students painted Aboriginal detailed hands and birds while learning their Noongar names.

Year 3
This week, the students in 3A have been learning all about capacity through an engaging and hands-on maths activity. Using a collection of fast food drink cups of various sizes, students were asked to estimate how much liquid each cup could hold before measuring the actual volume using water and measuring jugs.
The activity helped students develop a deeper understanding of millilitres and litres, and how these units are used in everyday life. It also encouraged them to make predictions, test their ideas, and compare results—building important skills in estimation, measurement, and problem-solving.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive nature of the task, working in small groups to support one another and discuss their findings. It was a fun and practical way to connect classroom learning with the real world, and a great example of how maths can come to life!

This term in 3E, we’ve kicked off our learning with an exciting and hands-on focus on measurement. Students have been exploring both informal and formal methods of measuring, using their hands, feet, blocks, and rulers to compare lengths, heights, and sizes of various objects around the classroom.
To apply their learning in a fun and creative way, students designed and built their very own Measurement Robots! This activity encouraged them to practise using a ruler accurately and apply mathematical thinking in a practical context. Each robot had different body parts that needed to be measured, compared, and labelled, making it a great opportunity to reinforce key skills while letting their imaginations shine.
It’s been a fantastic and engaging start to the term, and we’re looking forward to continuing our measurement adventures in the coming weeks!

Year 4
4E has hit the ground running this term! We've jumped straight back into our PLD learning routines and have been busy practicing how to use a dictionary—lots of great thinking and exploring new words! In maths, we've been diving into fractions and having a lot of fun with hands-on activities and games.
We’re also excited to welcome two new students to our class—Phoenix and Bailey! We're so happy to have them join the 4E family.
It’s been a great start, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of Term 3 brings!

Week 2 was an exciting and productive week for 4A, filled with rich learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. A major highlight was our first excursion of the year to Osprey House Environmental Centre in Griffin, where students from 4A, 4B, and 4C explored important concepts around environmental awareness and sustainability.
During the excursion, students participated in a variety of engaging sessions including a guided environmental walk, learning about local animals and habitats, recycling and waste management, and gaining insights into the culture and history of the area's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It was a memorable, hands-on learning experience that beautifully supported our science and HASS curriculum units. You can check out some of the great moments in the photos below!

Back in the classroom, students continued developing their writing skills by exploring persuasive texts. They focused on structure, text connectives, modal language, and how to write complex sentences to strengthen their arguments.
In mathematics, students deepened their understanding of tenths and hundredths in fractions and decimals, and practised multiplying numbers by 10, 100, and 1000. It’s been great to see their confidence growing in these areas.
We also celebrated progress in Reading Coach, where students worked on 20-minute reading tasks, selecting passages and building comprehension skills.
To round out the week, we introduced our new Health unit, starting important discussions about our digital footprints and the impact of online behaviour.
From hands-on learning experiences to exciting excursions and creative classroom projects, it's clear that Term 3 is off to a fantastic start. Thank you to our families for your continued support—we look forward to sharing more highlights with you in the weeks ahead!
I hope you all have a wonderful week.
Mrs Bayley
Deputy Principal
Deputy News Years 5 & 6 – Karen Herburg

Welcome to Term 3! We have had a very positive start to the term with students working hard already in learning. Please be mindful that all students should be in class and learning from 8.50 am. There is a high number of students running into school after this time and missing out on core learning time.
Year 5 Camp
A reminder to all parents and carers that our first ever Year 5 Camp is fast approaching. Year 5 students will be participating in a 3-day camp at the Apex Queensland Youth Camp, Twin Waters. The aim of the camp is to engage our students in a range of activities and challenges, that build their social skills, foster teamwork, resilience, and a love for the outdoors. We are looking forward to sharing this amazing time with our students. If you have not already, please ensure you have a camp note, if not, there are copies in the office that you can collected. The dates of camp are Monday 8 September to Wednesday 10 September 2025.
Year 5 students preparing for Year 6 leadership roles in 2026
As we look ahead to 2026, our Year 5 students will be encouraged to consider applying for Year 6 leadership positions. This is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in responsibility, communication, and teamwork. Staff members have already begun observing students' behaviours and interactions to identify those who consistently demonstrate leadership qualities such as respect, initiative, and collaboration. These observations will play a significant role in the selection process for next year's leadership roles. We encourage all Year 5 students to continue showcasing these qualities and to express their interest in leadership positions as the application process approaches. This program will be rolling out this Semester, so keep an eye out on further information coming your way real soon.
Year 6 Year Book
As you are probably aware we are producing a yearbook for our Year 6 graduating students this year. One of the pages we include is a class photo board where we include a current picture of your child alongside a picture of them when they were in Prep or a photo of when they were 5 years old. If you haven’t already, please send this to your class teacher; it is such a wonderful keepsake for them as they begin a new chapter that is High School.
Respect for Staff
It is important that we model respect for one another. A number of students are still using unacceptable language and disrespectful behaviours towards teachers and when this behaviour occurs, parents should be notified. Parents play an important role in this. We need to encourage respectful discussions in and outside school, so that children do not repeat language and behaviours that contravene our school behaviour policy.
SPOTLIGHT IN LEARNING!
Year 5 News
Students from 5C have been engaged in a Friday Middle Session Maths and English Rotations. They are engaged, enthusiastic and excited to be strengthening their skills around these areas. Their favourites are Jumbled Sentences where they have to re-create the sentence, then add their own to follow the theme. Another fan favourite is Multiplication Concentration. In this rotation it’s like memory however students must multiply out the pair. If a player flips over the same number, they collect this pair whilst other players must multiply out. The one with the most pairs wins the game. Feedback from students is positive. They state it makes ‘them think’.

In 5D, we have been very busy. In term 3 we have dived headfirst into our learning. We have had some great lessons which include touching up on our English skills such as sentence types, noun groups, facts and opinions and persuasive devices. We have had a great time making each of the persuasive devices we learn into little magazines and really making these our own. With the very first Year 5 camp for Morayfield East coming up we are very excited and are looking forward to this in Week 9. I am sure will come around in no time!
Year 6 News
6C - Year 6 are working on their persuasive writing skills. As a fun Friday activity 6C used their powers of persuasion to convince the police to arrest a well-known thief: Goldilocks. Having unlawfully entered the bears' home, this unlikely criminal sampled their meal, destroyed baby bear's chair and had the nerve to take a nap in his snug little bed. When disturbed, Goldi simply ran away. No apologies. NOTHING! We hope she is apprehended soon.

6E - We have been looking at the different types of persuasive techniques to use when we get to writing our persuasive text in a few weeks. In this activity, the students had to create example sentences that focussed on one of the specific techniques. We were able to produce some great practise sentences that really showed a clear opinion.

We have had some cooler, windy weather of late, so please ensure your child has a warm school jumper for the day.
Until next time …… 😊

News from the Health Room
Student medical information
Could you please notify the Health Room if your child has been recently diagnosed with a new health condition or their existing condition has changed.
If your student has been diagnosed with Asthma, Anaphylaxis or Allergies we require a current Action Plan (this plan is provided by your GP or Specialist) as well as the prescribed medication. For more information on Allergies and Asthma please visit Queensland Government website.
Medication Administration at School
For medication to be administered at school, there must be medical authorisation for the student to have that medication. This can be in the form of a Medication Order, Asthma Action Plan, Anaphylaxis Action Plan, Action Plan for Allergic Reactions, Diabetes Action Plan, Young Persons Seizure Emergency (and Midazolam) Instruction and written instructions from a prescribing health practitioner for routine medications. This includes over the counter medications such as Panadol, nasal sprays and lozenges.
The information for parents/carers and Health Practitioners sheet provides advice for parents/carers and their child’s health practitioner regarding the documentation required for Queensland state schools to safely administer medication to students while they are at school or school-related activities.
The parent/carer must also complete the Consent to administer medication form. All medication must be in its original packaging, with an attached pharmacy label (containing both the student’s and Drs name, administration time)
If you would like to chat with the Health Room staff regarding the administration of medication, please call 54 288 446.
